Annie Mackay established herself as an independent jeweller and designer after graduating from the historic School of Jewellery in the heart of Birmingham's jewellery quarter, and working with fine jewellers across the country. Her passion to develop her skill led her to further study in Florence, Italy, where she was invited to work, and learn, from master goldsmiths and stone setters in the renowned Florentine artisan quarter of Oltrarno. Annie also developed her craft in Idar-Oberstein, Germany, where she studied gemstone cutting and carving techniques - skills for which she has been recognized for with awards. Annie still regularly visits her Florentine teachers to exchange ideas and develop techniques for setting and jewellery design.
Whilst Annie is classically trained in traditional goldsmithing techniques, she has a keen interest in the latest technologies and advancements in the jewellery trade. In her own creations she uses a combination of traditional skills and leading edge technologies to create high quality bespoke pieces.
Annie specialises in creating bespoke pieces designed with the style of the customer in mind. As a specialist in 3D CAD design and modelling she can offer customers photo realistic designs and highly accurate quotes so that the customer can be confident about the end product they will receive.
Annie Mackay is currently also the senior goldsmith at John McKellar Designer Jewellery, a boutique contemporary jewellery shop in Hereford, where she restores antique jewellery and creates bespoke pieces for clients.
In common with all lovers of fine jewellery, Annie has always held a fascination with gemstones. This has been developed through her research in to the science of natural and synthetic gemstones and the many treatments that can be applied to them, which she studied as part of her training. She spent time in Idar-Oberstein, Germany, where she learnt cutting and carving techniques. She has her own equipment for creating bespoke cabochon and hand carved stones and holds a diamond grading certificate which enables her to choose the best stones for you when buying diamonds and other gemstones for your jewellery.
Her knowledge of the trade and contacts throughout Europe mean that she can source unusual gemstones, metals and ethical materials to ensure that every piece she creates not only looks wonderful, but recognises the efforts of everyone involved in bringing her jewellery to life.
